What are the benefits of an evidence-based management approach in human resource practice? An Interview with Michael Vodianoi from ScienceforWork

High-quality decision-making matters. Evidence-based Management is an easy to apply approach that helps management practitioners to make better decisions. I got the chance to talk to Michael Vodianoi from ScienceforWork and Northmark Talent about the benefits of an Evidence-based Management approach in Human Resource practice. In our discussion Michael provides valuable insights about the principles underlying evidence-based HR, its practical benefits and how it can be applied in daily business.

Learning and development is a leadership responsibility: How to take initiative when it comes to L&D

Here at CQ Net, we support managers and professionals to develop their employees, teams and organizations with evidence-based practices to the next performance level. This approach is based on the assumption that learning and development (L&D) is a key leadership responsibility. This is in contrast to the mainstream understanding of L&D which is mainly seen as a responsibility of the human resource (HR) department or external organizational development consultants. Taking this into consideration the question arises how managers and professionals can get into the driver seat when it comes to L&D. We collected a set of interventions that will help you to strengthen your and your organization’s L&D competencies.

What can we learn from high reliability organizations? Five lessons for professionals

High Reliability Organizations, also called HROs, manage to consistently deliver high performance over a long period of time in an extremely challenging environment. Learning the hard way is no option for HROs as they operate in areas where any mistake can have severe consequences. On top of this HROs manage to quickly adapt to changing circumstances and come up with innovative solutions to complex problems (Bierly et al. 2008). As managers from the private and public sector we were wondering what lessons we could learn from HROs. Starting from here, we had a look at research and theory behind HROs and derived five evidence-based practices you can implement in your organization.

The future of performance management: A critical review of current practices and innovations

Recently, there has been a trend among top-performing companies to reinvent their performance management systems. Organizations are discarding the traditional practice of evaluation through a system of training, promotion, and reward to a  nimble system that works in the present moment (Buckingham & Goodall, 2015). These new systems focus on assessing future performance or potential rather than a focus on the past. This blog post will describe the latest innovations in performance management and their viability.
What innovations do exist in the area of performance management and what is there benefit from an evidence-based management point of view?

Unlocking the secrets of psychological safety: What does scientific evidence tell us?

One of the most important aspects of organizational life is that management and staff feel secure in taking risks. The concept of psychological safety is the belief that a team is safe to take interpersonal risks without negative consequences for their career (Kahn, 1990). Team members who feel accepted within their teams experience psychological safety. Recent research on psychological safety show that it is an important factor for workplace effectiveness (Edmondson & Lei, 2014).

Firm as a rock: Assessing, harnessing, and building resilience in an organization

One of the current “trends” in the science of management is examining employees’ resilience. Like “emotional intelligence” and “grit” before it, “resilience” has become a desirable and much-discussed quality that hiring managers seek and leaders work to increase (Leadbeater, Dodgen, & Solarz, 2005). This is not without reason – resilience has been found to predict long-term success in a variety of fields (Klohen, 1996).

Is traditional consulting a future-proof business model? A plea for re-orientation

The consulting industry is currently undergoing a radical change. Traditional strategy, restructuring, and implementation consulting agencies are more and more under pressure. The causes are manifold and can be anything from not meeting client requirements to new scientific findings and easier access to current knowledge via the internet. Alternative consulting approaches are focusing on the traditional consulting model’s weaknesses and become more and more important. We summarized four reasons for a reorientation of traditional consulting agencies.

Embracing diversity productively in the workplace: What does scientific evidence tell us?

Diversity, and the need to productively diversify, presents ongoing dilemmas in the professional world. Numerous fields that were previously relatively homogenous are slowly achieving greater parity in terms of race, gender, disability status, and other sources of distinct experience (Bijak et al, 2007). As organizations change in their demographic composition, a variety of growing pains can occur. This is particularly the case in organizations that have not prepared or adjusted for their changing workforce and its needs.

Why we need more critical thinking and how to develop the necessary skills in your organization

I attended an instructor led leadership training session a couple of weeks ago. The training was well-organized, the training material of good quality and the trainers applied various training methodologies such as presentation sessions and interactive group work activities. However, there was one thing that really struck me.

Why collaborative learning is essential in organizations

Exchanging knowledge is a great way to learn from and with other people, generate innovative ideas and solve complex problems. In addition, we all bring a vast amount of knowledge and experience with us that can add tremendous value to each and every member of a team or group that participates in knowledge exchange sessions. However, the benefit of structured knowledge exchange sessions goes far beyond that. We are all human beings and thus it is also a great deal of fun meeting other people, sharing knowledge and enjoying the time while learning from each other.
